Sutej, who led the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra in recent years, was bornin the coastal city of Rijeka on 31 July 1951.
He earned international reputation after he was the art director of theHollybush Festival in New Jersey from 1986 to 1993, and after he establishedthe Real Orquestra Simfonica de Sevilla in Spain in 1990.
Sutej was the musical director of Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice from 1990to 1993.
He conducted more than 100 opera performances in the Vienna State Opera aswell as the first four Christmas concerts in Vienna with Placido Domingo andJose Carreras.
He received a series of awards, including the Order of the City of Vienna,the honorary membership bestowed by the Real Academia de Belles Artes, andbecame an honorary citizen of Seville.
