The last Chief of the General Staff of the former Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), General Blagoje Adzic, reportedly died on Thursday and was buried in Belgrade in secrecy on Saturday, according to some Serbian web portals and the dailies "Press" and Kurir".
There has been no official confirmation of the death of this general, whom Croatia has charged with genocide and war crimes during the JNA aggression in 1991.
"Press" has reported on its web portal that Lieutenant-General Adzic, 79, died of a long and serious illness and that the funeral was conducted on 3 March, with his widow, relatives and close friends attending. It has also reported that a commemoration was held at the military headquarters in Belgrade prior to the funeral.
Adzic is believed to have been one of the most responsible persons for the military aggression which Serbia launched against Slovenia and Croatia in 1991.
In 1991 the county court in the eastern Croatian city of Osijek issued a warrant for Adzic's arrest on suspicion of genocide and war crimes against civilians and prisoners of war during the aggression in 1991. An indictment against him was issued by a court in Vukovar and the case was later transferred to the Osijek court.
Adzic, born on 2 September 1932 in a village near the southeastern Bosnian town of Gacko, was the chief of the JNA general staff from 1989 to 1992. He was relieved of duty on 27 February 1992 when 32 other JNA generals and admirals were also sent into retirement. Since then he has never appeared in public.
