HDZ slate wins in 12 counties in MEP vote, SDP in eight

The opposition HDZ-HSP AS-BUZ coalition won the highest number of votes in Sunday's election for members of the European Parliament in 12 counties, followed by the ruling SDP-HNS-HSU coalition in eight counties, while the list topped by Ivan Jakovcic led in Istria County, according to incomplete State Election Commission results.

Both coalitions passed the five-percent threshold in the City of Zagreb and all counties, followed by the Labour Party, which passed the election threshold in 11 counties.

Broken down by county, the HDZ-led slate won the highest number of votes, winning more than 52 per cent in Lika-Senj County and more than 40 per cent in eight other countries.

The SDP-led slate won over 40 per cent in three counties.

The turnout in Croatia's first election for the EP, after 94 per cent of ballots had been counted, was 20.75 per cent.

The SDP won the highest number of votes in the northwest, and the HDZ in central and southern Croatia.
