The Croatian Journalists' Union (SNH) and the Croatian Journalists' Association (HND) at a news conference held on Monday, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day warned about a deteriorated position of journalists and called on all Croatian journalists to get organised and resist the destruction of their profession and to stop further deterioration media quality.
The recession, which also hit the media, has been used to exert pressure on reports to agree to pay cuts, SNH president Gabrijela Galic said.
HND President Zdenko Duka recalled physical attacks on and murders of journalists in Croatia.
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, SNH called on its members to join in a symbolic protest, called "Five Minutes of Thunderous Silence", and discontinue work from 11:55 to 12:00 hours to warn the authorities, employers and the public about the frequent violation of journalists' human and professional rights.
