Croatian Interior Minister Tomislav Karamarko confirmed that in an operation, jointly launched by the anti-corruption agency USKOK, the Customs Office and the police, 16 customs officers and six policemen were arrested on Wednesday morning, adding that this was proof that Croatia was fighting corruption at all levels of society and by all means.
"Let us not be naive and think that we will eradicate corruption with several operations such as this one," Karamarko said, adding he was confident that corruption in Croatia had been significantly reduced in the past two years.
Interior Ministry spokeswoman Aleksandra Ljuba told reporters that the Police National Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (PNUSKOK), in cooperation with several police departments and USKOK, was carrying out an investigation into several customs and police officers from Krapina-Zagorje County who are suspected of having committed several corruption-related crimes.
