A Japanese donation for mine removal in two communities in Glina municipality, some 50 kilometres south of Zagreb, was handed to local officials at a ceremony in the village of Marin Brod on Tuesday.

The donation, worth EUR 210,650, to be used for clearing mines from 174 square metres of farmland in the villages of Marin Brod and Prekopa, was handed over by Japanese Ambassador Yoshio Tamura. The agreement on the donation was signed in February 2010.

A plaque commemorating the Japanese government's assistance in mine removal was unveiled at today's ceremony in Marin Brod.

Speaking of Japanese donations to Croatia, Croatian Mine Action Centre (HCR) deputy director Mirko Ivanusic said one should also mention a USD$ 12 million project for the refugee camp Mala Gorica near Petrinja.

Sisak County deputy head Andrija Rudic recalled that Ambassador Tamura was named an honorary citizen of Sisak County. He expressed gratitude to all involved in mine removal in the county which he said was of great importance for economic revival.

Recalling the recent earthquake disaster in Japan, Glina Mayor Milan Baksic expressed sympathy and admiration for the Japanese people. "Even in such difficult moments you have the strength to help others," he said.

So far, Japan has donated EUR 1.8 million for mine removal in Croatia.
