Squares and landmarks of 37 Croatian cities and towns switched off their lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m Saturday, joining in the "Earth Hour" worldwide campaign, designed to send a powerful message for action on climate change.

Earth Hour is a global event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and held on the last Saturday of March annually, encouraging households and businesses to turn off their nonessential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change.

The event first took place in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all nonessential lights.

The head of the WWF project for Croatia, Petra Boic-Petrac, said on Saturday evening in Zagreb's Zrinjevac square, which also plunged into darkness as part of this global climate change campaign, that this year Croatian cities' turnout at the drive was biggest so far.

For instance, the Great Walls of Dubrovnik, the Arena amphitheatre in Pula, Saint Domnius' bell tower in Split, the Old Town in Osijek, joined in the drive.

As many as landmarks of 5,411 cities across the world plunged into darkness as part of this campaign on 31 March 2012 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., at participants' local time.
