Croatia and its government are fully committed to respecting the rule of law because they recognise it as the core of any democratic society, Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said at a high-level panel discussion on the rule of law, held before a general discussion at the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday.

Milanovic said that Croatia had travelled a long and demanding road over the last 20 years, all the while making efforts to adhere to the rule of law.

The rule of law remains the fundamental pillar of our home and foreign policy and we look forward to further cooperation in that area. At the same time, I think that every government should always observe the established international standards and mechanisms in combating corruption, organised crime, terrorism and serious violations of humanitarian law, the Croatian prime minister said.

Milanovic said that in order to strengthen the rule of law countries should cooperate more closely, especially within the United Nations, calling on the Security Council and the General Assembly to make their contribution to that end. He welcomed the declaration on the rule of law that was to be adopted at the end of the conference, and stressed that he in particular supported the UN's intention to connect the rule of law with the three fundamental pillars of the world organisation -- peace and security, human rights and development -- and thus contribute to a more prosperous, peaceful and just world.
