Croatia can be an example to all of Europe of how to treat a minority, the head imam of the Rijeka Islamic Community Majlis, Hajrudin Mujkanovic, was quoted as saying in Sarajevo's Dnevni Avaz daily of Monday in comment on the opening of an Islamic centre and a mosque in the northern Adriatic port of Rijeka on Saturday.
He said the presence of many believers and visitors had been expected but that the participation of the most prominent state and local officials gave the event special significance.
"It is about mutual respect and acknowledgement. Croatia is certainly an example to Europe of how to treat a minority people. The event and the speeches pass, guests leave, but the impression of belonging remains and it can't be replaced."
Mujkanovic said all Muslims as well as all other citizens were impressed to see Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel personally welcome all guests at the inauguration.
He highlighted the attendance of Croatian President Ivo Josipovic and the senior officials, notably Josipovic's talks with "our reis Husein Kavazovic and mufti Aziz Hasanovic."
