The national pensioners' union MUH called on the government and Parliament on Tuesday not to pass a bill that would freeze pensions next year, because it would deal a heavy blow to the already impoverished pensioners.
The government and Parliament were urged to withdraw the bill and send it for discussion at the first meeting of the National Council for Pensioners, which is yet to be established under a government proposal, the union said in a statement, noting that the bill was challenging the constitutional definition of Croatia as a welfare state.
The MUH said that the bill put elderly people in a position of second-class citizens without a possibility of living their lives in dignity from the income they had earned through their work and by pay contributions.
