Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor and her aides visited the southern town of Metkovic on Saturday to see what the government could do to help the population of the flooded Neretva River valley.
Kosor said that an initial 100 million kuna had been earmarked for the construction of a dyke, adding that work would begin next spring. She noted that a dyke should have been built long ago, and expressed hope that the construction work would be completed shortly.
"The government decided yesterday to allocate a million kuna from budget reserves to the Town of Metkovic to buy what is most needed at the moment and to repair the damage," Kosor said.
Kosor said she sympathised with the local population, aware that the area had been hit by a major flood twice this year.
