Polish citizens Andrzej Domanski (44) and Andrzej Krakowiak (42) were killed after their sport aircraft crashed in the Keser Potok hamlet in Krnjak municipality, 60 km southwest of Zagreb, on Saturday afternoon as they were flying from the Czech Republic, across Hungary and Croatia, to Italy.
There is no doubt as to the victims' identities, while the cause of the accident is being investigated, reporters were told at the crash site on Sunday by Karlovac chief of police Josip Celic, Croatia's chief investigator for plane crashes, Dinko Vodanovic, and investigating judge Mladen Kosijer.
Celic said the bodies were pulled out of the plane, but the crash site investigation was interrupted owing to wet terrain and heavy rain. He added that representatives of the Polish Embassy were present.
Vodanovic said the light aircraft of Czech manufacture with a Rotax 912 engine was completely destroyed.
The wreck will be transferred to Zagreb when the weather allows it, for a detailed examination in which Polish investigators will also take part.
Croatian and Polish investigators will also listen to the recordings of the entire communication between the pilots and flight controllers, said Vodanovic.
Kosijer said the bodies were transferred to the General Hospital in Karlovac, 50 km southwest of Zagreb, for a postmortem examination. He added there were eyewitnesses of the accident.
