A procession of tractors with which disgruntled farmers from the eastern Baranja region started for Zagreb at noon on Sunday was stopped by police patrols outside of Osijek.
Farmer representative Petar Pranjic told reporters the police did not tell them why they were stopped and that such conduct was a reflection of Croatia's policy and state towards farmers.
"We started the drive civilly, we announced our actions and other farmers were supposed to join us. Now they are us asking what's going on."
Asked what the protesters would do, Pranjic said they certainly would not clash with the police. "If necessary, we will go home honorably because we have at least tried, and those responsible should be shamed of the situation farmers are in."
He said the protesting farmers would initiate the dismissal of Croatian Chamber of Agriculture leaders for not representing farmers' interests well.
