The exhibition "Pompeii - Life in the Shadow of Vesuvius", featuring exhibits from the National Museum of Archeology in Naples which recreate and bear evidence of life in that Roman city destroyed in an eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, opened at Zagreb's Klovicevi Dvori gallery on Tuesday evening.

Opening the event, Culture Minister Jasen Mesic said that it was a result of the very good cooperation between the Italian and Croatian culture ministries.

The opening ceremony was also attended by Italian Ambassador Alessandro Pignatti, who said that more than two million people visit Pompeii every year.

The exhibition features about 100 artefacts, four body casts and two sculptures.

Pompeii is located near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of Pompei township.

The catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD destroyed and completely buried Pompeii and its sister city Herculaneum. The eruption buried Pompeii under 4 to 6 meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for over 1,500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy.

The Zagreb exhibition will last until July 10.
