Defence attorneys for former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader announced on Tuesday they would appeal against the Zagreb County Court verdict that sentenced their client to 10 years in prison for war profiteering and bribe taking in the Hypo Alpe Adria Bank and INA-MOL corruption cases.
"I still believe that there are circumstances which are in favour of Mr Sanader, which we hardly heard anything of in the narrative explanation of the verdict, for example how (the key witness) Robert Jezic disposed of the (bribe) money," defence attorney Cedo Prodanovic told the press outside the courthouse in central Zagreb.
Prodanovic said that there were realistic grounds for their appeal to succeed.
When asked how Sanader reacted to the verdict, the attorney said: "How can a person react after receiving a 10 year prison sentence?"
As they were leaving the courthouse, the defence attorneys Prodanovic, Jadranka Slokovic and Goran Suic were booed by a small group of people who accused them of defending a war profiteer.
