The Dukat dairy company has suspended the purchase of raw milk from 180 farms in eastern Croatia where elevated levels of aflatoxins have been detected and the purchase will resume as soon as the farms can deliver milk that meets health requirements, the company said on Friday.
It is estimated that Dukat buys about four per cent of its daily quantity of milk from those farms, or about 24,000 litres.
After it has been established that cattle fodder is the source of the aflatoxins, Dukat has made Mycofix available to the farmers in question in order to help them fix the problem as quickly as possible.
Milk from said farms will be retested in five days.
Dukat's director general for Croatia, Alen Fontana, said the suspension was necessary to protect consumers.
Since higher concentrations of aflatoxins have been detected in milk, Dukat has withdrawn questionable product from stores and obtained analysis equipment for daily testing of purchased raw milk.
