The European Parliament will on Thursday launch a procedure for the approval of the treaty of accession of Croatia to the European Union which will be completed by 1 December.

On Thursday, two documents -- a draft resolution on the accession treaty with Croatia and a draft resolution on Croatia's EU membership application -- will be on the agenda of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs. Both drafts have been prepared by the EP rapporteur for Croatia, Hannes Swoboda.

The committee is to vote on those two items on 14 November and forward them to a plenary session of the European Parliament which is expected to vote on the matter on 1 December.

After that, the Council of the EU, which will convene on 5 December, will officially adopt the draft treaty of accession whereby all procedural preconditions for the signing of the treaty will be met.

The European Parliament agrees with Croatia's accession to the European Union and with the Council's decision to accept Croatia's membership application, reads the draft resolution on the Croatia-EU treaty.

The draft resolution on the application welcomes the finalisation of Croatia's accession negotiations which the document says have considerably changed the social, political, economic and cultural landscape of the country.

The draft calls on Croatia to keep conducting reforms, adding that the process is not over and should be continued with equal determination and painstaking work.

The European Parliament is to call on the Commission to continue strictly and objectively monitoring the preparations for Croatia's accession and help the country to fulfil its obligations stemming from the negotiations.

Under special scrutiny will be reforms in the judiciary, fundamental rights, freedom and security, including war crimes prosecution and the anti-corruption drive, border management, police cooperation, clampdown on organised crime, market competition, and restructuring of the shipyards and the steel sector.

The European parliament will call on Croatia to keep maintaining good neighbourly relations and actively promote regional cooperation.
