The exhumation of victims killed by Communists has begun in Kustosijanska Street in Zagreb, the police in the Croatian capital reported on Tuesday.

The exhumation of victims killed in the wake of the Second World War started on Monday at the order of the Zagreb County Prosecutor's Office, police spokeswoman Jelena Bikic said.

The police said that the location of the mass grave had been known to them for six months. Apart from the police, forensic experts and prosecutors are also engaged in the unearthing of this multiple grave.

The minister of the interior, Tomislav Karamarko, has recently said in parliament that the police and prosecutorial authorities are investigating crimes committed by Communists. He has said it is unacceptable that there are about 900 pits with mass graves from that period and that nobody has been brought to justice for those crimes.
