The first direct talks between Serbia and Kosovo since Kosovo's declaration of independence three years ago ended in Brussels on Wednesday, with both sides saying that progress had been made.

The first meeting between Belgrade and Pristina began in Brussels on Tuesday evening under the auspices of the European Union. The Serbian delegation was led by the Political Director of the Foreign Ministry, Borko Stefanovic, while the Kosovo delegation was headed by Deputy Prime Minister Edita Tahiri.

"Good results have been achieved and the atmosphere was good and constructive," Stefanovic said, citing issues relating to land books, registers of births, marriages and deaths, telecommunications, and air traffic as areas where progress was made.

Tahiri said: "We have made good progress, but it is hard for me to say exactly how much progress we have made."

The two sides will meet several times a month in Brussels. The next meeting is to be held soon.
