GONG says voting proceeding in calm atmosphere

Voting in Sunday's runoff election for Croatia's president is proceeding in a calm atmosphere with no major incidents, observers of the GONG nongovernmental organisation reported, adding that everything was carried out in accordance with the procedure.

GONG observers reported a low turnout in Croatia and a somewhat higherturnout in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Over the past two days GONG received a number ofcomplaints concerning the violation of a moratorium on electioneering, mostlyby independent candidate Milan Bandic.

GONG is observing the election throughout Croatia on a pattern of 10 percentof polling stations selected by a statistical method. GONG reported that 10mobile teams were visiting polling stations in Bosnia-Herzegovina, as well asFrance, German, the United States and Switzerland. By 10:00 hours, GONG receivedreports from 199 polling stations.

Breaches of the electioneering ban regarding the distribution of leafletssupporting Milan Bandic and Ivo Josipovic were reported in the Zagreb region.
