Goran Habus of the HNS-SDP-HSU coalition was elected Varazdin mayor on Sunday in a runoff of an early mayoral election, winning 70 per cent of the vote, while the other candidate, independent Zlatko Horvat, won 28 per cent.
The residents of the northern Croatian town also elected two deputy mayors, Natalija Martincevic and Vjeran Radelic.
The turnout was 35.34 per cent.
The early mayoral ballot was the first early local election since 2009, when prefects, mayors and municipal heads and their deputies were elected indirectly for the first time.
The Varazdin polls were held after Mayor Ivan Cehok resigned in July from prison on suspicion of defrauding the town of millions of kuna.
