There are realistic chances for Croatia to wrap up it EU entry talks in June, by the end of Hungary's EU presidency, although the possibility for the formal closure to be carried out in July, at the very beginning of the Polish EU presidency, should not be ruled out either, European diplomatic sources reported on Wednesday.
All necessary political decisions for the closure of the negotiations will be adopted during Hungary's EU presidency, there is only a small question of whether all technical conditions for that would be carried out on time. If this will not be done in time, the negotiations could formally be concluded in July, but June is still a quite possible deadline, the diplomatic source said.
European Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding said on Wednesday she was impressed with the progress Croatia made in building its judicial system.
Reding said this to reporters after the European Commission at its regular weekly session discussed the current state of Croatia's EU entry talks.
The diplomatic sources stress that Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele agreed with Redin's assessment about Croatia's readiness. Fuele is scheduled to inform the Committee of Permanent Representatives in the European Union (COREPER) on the state of Croatia's membership negotiations with the bloc on Thursday
