Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said on Friday Croatia would insist on the expansion of the indictment against former Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic to include crimes committed in Croatia as well.

"We are drawing up a conclusion for the government session next week by which we will encourage the Chief State Prosecutor's Office, which is an independent body, to once again send all collected documentation together with a request to expand the indictment to the ICTY Chief Prosecutor, so that Mladic could be called to account for crimes committed in Croatia," Kosor said.

The Croatian judiciary has carried out several proceedings against Mladic during the war in Croatia when he was the head of the Yugoslav People's Army 9th corps in Knin.

The County Court in Sibenik has sentenced Mladic in absentia to 20 years in jail for the attack on the village of Kijevo in 1991. Mladic was also accused of attacks on civilian targets along the coast, including Sibenik and Zadar, as well as of the shelling of Pozega from Bosnia and of ordering the destruction of the Peruca dam and the hydropower plant.

The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Serge Brammertz, has said that his office is not planning to expand the indictment against Ratko Mladic, who is charged with genocide in Bosnia, to include crimes the troops under his command had committed in Croatia, including atrocities in Skabrnja in November 1991.

Mladic was captured in Serbia on May 26 after evading arrest for 16 years. He was transferred to the Netherlands on Tuesday evening and placed in the tribunal's detention unit in The Hague's district of Scheveningen.

The ICTY indicted him on 25 July 1995 for genocide and other war crimes in Bosnia and after that for genocide in Srebrenica.

The prosecution charges Mladic with being at the helm of a join criminal enterprise, together with Radovan Karadzic, aimed at permanently removing Bosniaks and Croats from Bosnia's territory claimed by Bosnian Serbs.
