The acting Speaker of Parliament, Josip Leko, said in a radio interview on Monday that he expected that the government would send the 1999 border demarcation agreement with Bosnia to parliament for ratification later this month.

He rejected criticism that the government was in a hurry to ratify the agreement and recalled that the document had been signed by President Tudjman when Croatia had a semi-presidential system and that there was no reason to doubt that the president was an authorised and legitimate signatory.

"The signature is valid and the agreement has been observed on the ground for 13 years," Leko said in an interview with Croatian Radio.

The parliament begins its autumn session on Tuesday.
