Croatian war veterans already are a constitutionally protected category, Social Democratic Party (SDP) president Zoran Milanovic said on Thursday, asked to comment on government announcements that it would consider moving up the law on war veterans into the constitutional category.
"War veterans are a constitutional category because of the amendments to the Constitution, veterans are entitled to a special state care. We jointly adopted this in June 2010," Milanovic told reporters in parliament.
On behalf of the SDP and its partners from the so-called Alliance for Changes, Milanovic promised war veterans a fair and affirmative relationship "once we win the election, which I am confident of."
Asked if the government had done all to prove the truth about the Homeland War, Milanovic said the government had tried and that when it comes to that issue the SDP had no serious objections to the government or the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).
He stressed that his party, notably during the term of Prime Minister Ivica Racan, spared no effort to defend the truth about the Homeland War.
"Ivica Racan personally wrote to the ICTY Prosecutor's Office and warned about unacceptable allegations in the indictment concerning the alleged joint criminal enterprise. Therefore I believe the SDP did all it could, but I repeat there isn't anything to be held against the HDZ either," Milanovic said.
