The police and prosecutorial authorities are still conducting an on-site investigation into a blast that occurred on railway tracks near the Podsused railway station in west Zagreb on early Wednesday morning, the local police reported on Wednesday afternoon appealing for patience from commuters and motorists, as both rail and road traffic are halted in that part of Zagreb while the on-site investigation is being carried out.
An explosion was reported at about 0350 hrs Wednesday on railway tracks in the vicinity of the Podsused railway station, and according to the first report from the city police, the explosion had occurred in front of a cargo train. There were no injuries. However, the blast damaged the tracks and the engine of the cargo train and caused the smashing of windows in nearby buildings and houses.
Later in the day, the Zagreb police commander Goran Burusic told reporters that the cause of what he labelled as "explosive reaction" had not been yet known, and he highlighted the fact that no one had been injured.
"The circumstances and the scale (of the blast) will be determined after the on-site investigation which will take some more time, and we will know more about the matter after its completion," Burusic said near the site of the accident which was cordoned off by the police.
