A protected witness on Thursday told the Zagreb County Court that two men, including the accused Robert Matanic, bought his scooter that was later used to hide an explosive device which killed Nacional weekly co-owner and reporter Ivo Pukanic and his business associate Niko Franjic in October 2008.

The witness, who testified under the pseudonym Koko, said that a man by the name of Mario or Marin contacted him in connection with his ad for the sale of the scooter. The man was accompanied by a slim man wearing a cap who did not speak, the witness said.

The witness did not name the buyer of the scooter, but the accused Robert Matanic did it himself, asking the witness if he remembered who was with him (Matanic) when he came to buy the scooter.

The witness said that after Pukanic's assassination the police called him to identify the suspects and that he identified only the man who had paid him for the scooter.

Matanic's attorney asked the witness if before identifying the suspects he had seen TV footage of the suspects or their photos in newspapers, to which the witness said that he followed the case in the media, but that he gave the police a detailed description of the people who had bought his scooter before that.

The trial resumes on April 12, when the court is to hear the testimony of the main witness Tomislav Marjanovic, a former member of Matanic's group who the prosecution alleges took part in preparations for Pukanic's murder, but decided to cooperate with the Office for the Prevention of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK).

The cousins Robert and Luka Matanic, Amir Mafalani, Zeljko Milovanovic, Bojan Guduric and Slobodan Djurovic are standing trial before the Zagreb County Court for conspiring to kill Pukanic and for killing the reporter and his business partner Niko Franjic, who was a collateral victim. The group is also believed to have planned the murder of two other people in the Zagreb area.

Milenko Kuzmanovic, Sreten Jocic, and Zeljko Milovanovic are to be put on trial in Belgrade for the same crime. Jocic is believed to have paid 1.5 million euros to have Pukanic killed.
