Residents of the northern town of Varazdin will choose a new mayor and two deputies in the runoff on October 30 since none of the four candidates received more than 50 per cent of the vote on Sunday.
Two candidates that captured the most votes in the first round are Goran Habus of the centre-left HNS-SDP-HSU coalition and independent Zlatko Horvat, the election commission chairman Alan Pretkovic announced later in the evening after the ballots were counted at all 48 polling stations.
Habus took 43.87 per cent of the votes and Horvat 22.93 per cent. The other two candidates were Social Liberal Miljenko Ernoic (15.73 per cent) and independent Ladislav Ilcic (15.62 per cent).
According to preliminary figures, 15,651 voters, or 37.94 per cent, took part in the ballot, and 1.83 per cent of the ballots were declared invalid.
