Amnesty International on Friday responded to the Croatian Justice Ministry's remarks about the AI report "Behind a Wall of Silence: Prosecution of War Crimes in Croatia" which talks about failure to punish crimes committed during the 1991-95 war in Croatia.
In today's statement, AI said it was responding to the wrong interpretation of some facts in the report, bringing into question some positions by the Croatian Justice Ministry.
AI said it was especially concerned about the ministry's position on Vladimir Seks, the incumbent deputy parliament speaker, and his possible command responsibility for war crimes.
The ministry's refusal to consider whether evidence that has been made public should prompt an investigation shows a worrying lack of impartiality, which could be viewed as pressure on judicial independence, including on the State Prosecutor's Office, which has the duty to investigate such evidence, said AI.
AI reiterated its conclusions that, despite some progress in a certain number of areas, there remains a serious shortcoming in war crimes prosecution in Croatia.
AI called on its members to write to the Croatian authorities about the failure to punish war crimes.
