The national carrier Croatia Airlines said on Thursday that the trade unions were pushing the company into financial ruin by claiming that its safety and security standards were at risk.
Safety and security is a key to success of any airline, and never in its history has Croatia Airlines recorded a single serious security incident, the company said in a statement.
A day-long strike by three trade unions active in Croatia Airlines, which started at 6am on Thursday, forced the national carrier to cancel 51 per cent of flights. Aircraft were flying according to a special schedule.
The company said that nearly 2,000 of 3,026 passengers who had booked flights for today would be flown to their destinations in time and without disruption, while the rest would feel the consequences of the strike. The direct damage caused by the strike was estimated at 200,000 euros. Flights were expected to resume as of 6am on Friday.
