The Croatian sports daily Sportske Novosti has reported that the sports director of the football club Dinamo Zagreb, Zoran Mamic, was recently questioned at the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) headquarters in Nyon not only as a witness but also as a suspect in an alleged rigging of a final match of the national cup in 2009.
"UEFA has replied to our inquiry and Zoran Mamic was indeed in Nyon, as a witness, but also as a suspect," Sportske Novosti editor-in-chief Robert Sola told Nova TV on Monday evening. UEFA confirmed the allegations in a written reply to Sportske Novosti.
Citing documents collected by the German police force, which launched the investigation, Sportske Novosti in late July reported that Mamic, referees and the so-called betting mob had fixed last year's first final cup match in which Dinamo beat Hajduk 3:0.
The German police have information that around five million euros was made from betting on this match, and that of that amount, two million euros went to someone in Croatia. The match was reportedly watched from a stand at Zagreb's Maksimir stadium by the brothers Ante and Milan Sapina, who reportedly earned three million euros on that match.
After this scandal broke out, Dinamo's management, including Mamic, said that he was in Nyon as a witness and that neither the club nor its sports director had anything to do with betting shops, betting or the people said to be under investigation.
