An anti-government protest, announced as the biggest so far, began in Zagreb's main square around 6 pm on Saturday, with disgruntled citizens demanding that the government step down and an election date.

The rally initially drew several hundred protesters but the number quickly grew to about 3,000, according to reporters' estimates.

The protesters then went on the 13th protest march through the capital, calling on everyone to take to the streets and carrying banners reading "General strike", "Direct democracy", "330,000 jobless, 70,000 without a salary - Capitalism? No, thanks", "Down with the government and injustice", "Parties are the problem, not the solution", "We want elections", "Equality, employment, self-management", "Working without a salary is worse than slavery, "Annul ownership transformation and privatisation" and many others.

Anti-government protests organised by citizens began at 6 pm in 15 Croatian cities.

Before the protest in Zagreb began, one of the initiators, Ivan Pernar, was arrested while giving a statement to a Slovenian TV in St. Mark's square, the seat of the government. There is a court order banning him from being in that square and nearby downtown streets.

Earlier today, protests were also held in Cakovec, Virovitica, Djakovo and Rijeka, the latter drawing about 500 protesters.
