Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said on the central Adriatic island of Pag on Sunday that it was good that former prime minister Ivo Sanader had returned to Zagreb because by doing so he had shown that he was aware of the duty to testify before an investigating commission.

"Let us wait and see what he will say," Josipovic told reporters asked to comment on the return of the former PM from the United States and the testimony before a commission investigating possible wrongdoings in the INA oil company.

Incumbent Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor who is visiting the eastern Croatian town of Virovitica was informed of Sanader returned from the United States by reporters earlier today. Asked to comment on Sanader's return, Kosor said "home is the best place to be".

Asked if Sanader's testimony was an opportunity for him "to talk about his information concerning the alleged transfer of customs deposits into the HDZ treasury", Josipovic said he assumed that the commission would ask Sanader about everything.

The president appealed to all politicians not to comment on ongoing judicial cases.

Reiterating that Croatia had already been fined by the European Court of Human Rights because its senior state officials had commented on ongoing judicial cases and declared guilty those who had not yet been convicted, Josipovic said he did not wish to cause a similar verdict.

Asked about the alleged pressure exerted by finance Minister Ivan Suker on Damir Mihanovic from Croatia Osiguranje insurance company so as to prevent him from speaking about irregularities, Josipovic said evidence is yet to be collected to prove this.

According to the media, Mihanovic, a former member of the Croatia Osiguranje management Board, was the first to report the 2007 contentious meeting in the government headquarters, at which it was allegedly suggested to state-own companies to go into business with Fimi Media.
