The Internal Affairs Department within the Interior Ministry, which carried out an inquiry at the police directorate, did not find any substantial circumstances that would corroborate Damir Polancec's accusations against chief police director Oliver Grbic.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Polancec, indicted for white-collar crime in several cases, implicated Grbic as being an initiator of anonymous reports against Opposition leaders.
Interior Ministry spokesman Krunoslav Borovec said on Tuesday that the ministry's Internal Affairs Department established that there were no substantial grounds to corroborate the allegations against the chief police director.
The findings of the seven-day check made by the internal affairs department were sent to the Office of the Chief State Prosecutor which should now decide on steps to be taken next.
During last week's inquiry, Grbic was interviewed and certain documentation was checked.
Apart from Polancec, Social Democratic Party official Slavko Linic, too, accused Grbic of being behind an anonymous report alleging that Linic misused funds designed for the purchase of arms for the defence of the city of Rijeka in 1991.
All these allegations prompted President Ivo Josipovic to recently convene a session of the National Security Council. At its session on 31 May, the Council called on all relevant bodies to check reports of alleged abuse of judicial institutions and to report to the Council about their findings. It said that it also encouraged all institutions to continue the uncompromising fight against all forms of crime.
