Slovenian Prime Minister-Designate Janez Jansa on Friday acquainted the national parliament with his cabinet's programme, stressing that serious belt-tightening measures must be launched after years of spending.

"This year we must cut public spending by 10 percent in comparison to last year. This is not about saving but about the reality. The fiscal deficit must be reduced as we can no longer finance it by borrowing," Jansa said at the session of the parliament which is expected to vote later in the day on his cabinet consisting of 12 ministers from a five-party coalition led by Jansa's Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS).

Financial consolidation and economic growth also require measures aimed at encouraging investments and entrepreneurship, according to the PM-Designate.

Therefore, the Jansa cabinet is set to make payment periods shorter to facilitate the business performance of small and medium enterprises as well as to cut red tape and introduce investment relief.

The new government will try to attract more foreign investments, which are necessary, and Jansa called for changing "the Slovenian mentality" and the hostile attitude towards foreign investments.

He also called on trade unions and the Opposition to support his cabinet's programme.
