Serbia has declared war on regional drug smuggling rings and this is my message to the narco mafia, Serbian President Boris Tadic said in Mostar on Tuesday, commenting on claims by relevant services in Belgrade that he and other Serbian leaders face assassination threats from criminal groups.
Under no circumstances will Serbia give up prosecuting members of criminal groups, Tadic said, adding that he was not speaking only of the Serbian but also of the regional organised criminal groups that are smuggling cocaine from South America and heroin from Afghanistan.
Serbia has stepped up protection for its president Tadic and other leaders as they face credible assassination threats from criminal groups, officials said on Tuesday.
Tadic said that in fighting regional drug smuggling rings Belgrade had the best cooperation with the authorities in Zagreb.
He recalled that last year, Serbia confiscated five tonnes of cocaine.
